ER2-0841

On Dec. 1, 2015 the ER-2 and DC-8 flew combined flights over the Olympic Peninsula to observe the final portions of a storm front moving through the area. The flights were executed in support of the Olympic Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEX). The primary mission objective for these flights was to image snowfall over the Olympic Mountain Range. This photo, taken from the ER-2 aircraft at an altitude of 63,000 feet, shows the contrail from the DC-8 aircraft and the “terminator,” a term for the Earth’s shadow in the atmosphere after sunset.
