Flying very close to rocky terrain in the Mojave Desert, the NASA Dryden DROID aircraft provided good data for project engineers during flight tests of a miniature ground collision avoidance system for small unmanned air vehicles. The DROID research aircraft, short for Dryden Remotely Operated Integrated Drone, was flown with a smartphone containing the collision avoidance software connected to its autopilot to enable automatic fly-ups or turns when the aircraft neared terrain.May 31, 2012
