Air Force Major William J. “Pete” Knight in his full-pressure flight suit, kneeling in front of X-15 no. 2 on NASA’s back ramp. Knight would reach Mach 6.72 or 4,520 mph (7,274 km/h), at 102,100 feet (31,120 m), on October 3, 1967, a speed record for the aircraft.
