Gravitational Lensing

Multimedia

This graphic illustrates how a faraway quasar (an extremely bright region in the center of some distant galaxies) is altered by a massive foreground galaxy.
This artist concept depicts an ultra-dense dead star, called a white dwarf, passing in front of a small red star. NASA planet-hunting Kepler was able to detect gravitational lensing by measuring a strangely subtle dip in the star brightness.
This plot shows data obtained from NASA Spitzer Space Telescope, and the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment telescope located in Chile, during a microlensing event.
This is view from ESA Hubble Space Telescope of a very massive cluster of galaxies, MACS J0416.1-2403, located roughly 4 billion light-years away and weighing as much as a million billion suns.
This artist map of the Milky Way shows the location of one of the farthest known exoplanets, lying 13,000 light-years away. Most of the thousands of exoplanets discovered to date are closer to our solar system, as indicated by the pink/orange areas.
This artist impression depicts the accretion disc surrounding a black hole, in which the inner region of the disc precesses. Precession means that the orbit of material surrounding the black hole changes orientation around the central object.
