I’m Katiria Colon Rivera and I just graduated from Pablo Colón Berdecia High School in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico. I’m going into University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus.
Which StoryMap topic are you presenting on?
I’m presenting with my friends on spatial water quality: specifically the Vision project and the data analysis.
What have been some highlights of the OCEANOS program?
I definitely met lots of special people. I went to Culebra for the first time, I had never been there before. I learned how to snorkel, I had never done that before. And in general, I learned a lot. When we went diving, we had the coral reefs really close to us and it was really fun and it was amazing; one coral reef here, then another one there. I was like, ‘What is happening??’ But it was amazing. It was amazing.
Did anything surprise you in this program?
I didn’t expect to meet friends. We have actually become so close to each other. We live with each other, so we spend 24/7 together. That was that was kind of surprising. I didn’t expect to have friends here, and it was really cool.
How does this internship fit into either what you’re already studying or what you’re hoping to do next?
I want to do a curriculum sequence in meteorology in Mayagüez and I want to pursue a PhD in oceanography.
What are you going to be taking with you from OCEANOS?
Lots of information. Friends, the mentors. All of it.
Is there anything you would change about the program?
I don’t think so. It was all amazing: lots of new experiences, new people, new friends.

Soy Katiria Colón Rivera y me acabo de graduar de la Escuela Secundaria Pablo Colón Berdecia en Barranquitas, Puerto Rico. Voy a la Universidad de Puerto Rico, campus de Mayagüez.
¿Qué tema de StoryMap presentará?
Estoy presentando con mis amigos sobre la calidad espacial del agua: específicamente el proyecto Vision y el análisis de datos.
¿Cuáles han sido algunos aspectos destacados del programa OCEANOS?
Definitivamente conocí a mucha gente especial. Fui a Culebra por primera vez, nunca había estado allí antes. Aprendí a hacer snorkel, nunca lo había hecho antes. Y en general, aprendí mucho. Cuando fuimos a bucear, teníamos los arrecifes de coral muy cerca de nosotros y fue muy divertido y fue increíble; un arrecife de coral aquí, luego otro allá. Yo estaba como, ‘¿Qué está pasando?’ Pero fue increíble. Fue increíble.
¿Hubo algo sorprendente para ti en este programa?
No esperaba encontrarme con amigos. De hecho, nos hemos vuelto tan cercanos el uno al otro. Vivimos juntos, así que pasamos juntos las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana. Eso fue algo sorprendente. No esperaba tener amigos aquí, y fue realmente genial.
¿Cómo encaja esta pasantía en lo que ya estás estudiando o en lo que esperas hacer a continuación?
Quiero hacer una secuencia curricular en meteorología en Mayagüez y quiero hacer un doctorado en oceanografía.
¿Qué te vas a llevar de OCEANOS?
Mucha información. Amigos. Los mentores. Todo ello.
¿Hay algo que cambiarías del programa?
No me parece. Todo fue increíble: muchas experiencias nuevas, gente nueva, nuevos amigos.
