My name is Karla Sanabria Seda, I study in the Escuela Secundaria de Puerto Rico – also known as University High School – and I’m going into my senior year.
Which StoryMap topic are you presenting on?
I’m going to be presenting on spatial water quality. I’m going to be talking in general about our work plan, and presenting some data analysis of the comparison between Lajas and Culebra on light attenuation and the chlorophyll spectrum.
What have been some highlights of the OCEANOS program?
I have always loved the ocean. I have done snorkeling before, but I have never really known much about the ocean; I didn’t know that there were so many physics and chemistry components to it. And when we went to Culebra and Lajas, for example, I have never taken a sea urchin in my hands, like a sea cucumber. And it just feels so awesome; seeing it directly with my own eyes. I also didn’t know much about coral reefs. I knew a little about them, but I didn’t even know a fire coral existed. I had never seen it before. Learning in general how important it is for the marine ecosystem and how important it is for the oxygen it produces: it’s just good to know more about that.
Was anything surprising for you in this program?
When I came here I really didn’t know what I was going to do. I didn’t expect to be working directly in the ocean with water quality sensors. I have never worked with that before. So that was very cool to know.
How does this internship fit into either what you’re already studying or what you’re hoping to do next?
I have always been interested in STEM areas. I only see myself in that in the future and I was not very sure what exactly I want to study in college, but chemistry has always been my favorite part and I would really love to somehow mix it with the ocean and climate change. So I will definitely use all the information I’ve learned here. In general I have learned so many things I just never would have imagined.
What are you going to be taking with you from OCEANOS?
Definitely a lot of friendship. I hope we stay connected. Definitely the professors. I think that somehow they can be a source of help in my future, like in thesis work or something. And in general experiences, unique experiences; for example, we were swimming in the ocean and I remember we got stuck with a coral reef and I pinched myself with the sea urchin. Honestly in the moment it didn’t even hurt; I was just like, this is part of it. I honestly enjoyed it. It was just fun.

¿Qué tema de StoryMap presentará?
Voy a presentar sobre la calidad espacial del agua. Hablaré en general sobre nuestro plan de trabajo y presentaré algunos análisis de datos de la comparación entre Lajas y Culebra sobre la atenuación de la luz y el espectro de la clorofila.
¿Cuáles han sido algunos aspectos destacados del programa OCEANOS?
Siempre me ha gustado el océano. He hecho esnórquel antes, pero nunca he sabido mucho sobre el océano; No sabía que había tantos componentes de física y química. Y cuando fuimos a Culebra y Lajas, por ejemplo, nunca he tomado un erizo de mar en mis manos, como un pepino de mar. Y se siente tan increíble; verlo directamente con mis propios ojos. Tampoco sabía mucho sobre los arrecifes de coral. Sabía un poco sobre ellos, pero ni siquiera sabía que existía un coral de fuego. Nunca lo había visto antes. Aprender en general lo importante que es para el ecosistema marino y lo importante que es para el oxígeno que produce: es bueno saber más sobre eso.
¿Hubo algo sorprendente para ti en este programa?
Cuando llegué aquí, realmente no sabía lo que iba a hacer. No esperaba estar trabajando directamente en el océano con sensores de calidad del agua. Nunca he trabajado con eso antes. Así que fue genial saberlo.
¿Cómo encaja esta pasantía en lo que ya estás estudiando o en lo que esperas hacer a continuación?
Siempre me han interesado las áreas STEM. Solo me veo en eso en el futuro y no estaba muy seguro de qué quería estudiar exactamente en la universidad, pero la química siempre ha sido mi parte favorita y realmente me encantaría mezclarla de alguna manera con el océano y el cambio climático. Así que definitivamente usaré toda la información que he aprendido aquí. En general, he aprendido tantas cosas que nunca hubiera imaginado.
¿Qué te vas a llevar de OCEANOS?
Definitivamente mucha amistad. Espero que nos mantengamos conectados. Definitivamente los profesores. Creo que de alguna manera pueden ser una fuente de ayuda en mi futuro, como en el trabajo de tesis o algo así. Y en general experiencias, experiencias únicas; por ejemplo, estábamos nadando en el océano y recuerdo que nos quedamos atrapados en un arrecife de coral y me pellizqué con el erizo de mar. Honestamente en el momento ni siquiera dolió; Yo estaba como, esto es parte de eso. Honestamente lo disfruté. Fue divertido.
