My name is Karen López. I go to Ileana de Gracia High School in Vega Alta, and I am going into my senior year of high school.
Which StoryMap topic are you presenting on?
I’m going to be presenting with my group the story map about plankton. I’m presenting the expedition we took to Cayo Enrique in La Parguera Lajas, and the experience of the group itself. And the goodbyes and thank yous.
What have been some highlights of the OCEANOS program?
My highlight of the two weeks we had was definitely exploring the ecosystems face to face, seeing everything, especially because of the snorkeling gear they gave us. I’ve never had one of my own, so it was a new thing and I got to learn how to use it properly, and when we went to the water it was a whole new experience. Obviously we have seen things on the internet, but it’s not the same as when you’re face to face with those things.
Did anything surprise you in this program?
I would say the things they gave us. I was really surprised because they gave us an iPad. They gave us snorkeling gear. They took us to places that I’ve never been to. So I think that’s what surprised me most because we got the things and we got to use them in the field.
How does this internship fit into either what you’re already studying or what you’re hoping to do next?
Personally, I wanted to study marine biology. Right now I’ve been looking more into just biology, but OCEANOS was more of that experience of seeing, ‘oh, do I really want to do this in college or as a career in the future?’ I would say yes, totally. And I will be looking more into NASA and other internships that follow along with oceanography. So I think in general it definitely it opened my eyes to college programs and things like that.
What are you going to be taking with you from OCEANOS?
I would say context. I’ve seen a lot of different people that are interested in a lot of things that can be useful in oceanography: you don’t necessarily have to study marine biology to study or work in certain fields of the ocean. So getting to know different people – I would say that was the best thing that I could take from this experience because I’m really hoping I can keep in contact with these people. Who knows: in the future, some are going to be my boss, some are going to be my colleagues. I’m really hoping that in the future I get to work with or see them again.

¿Cuáles han sido algunos aspectos destacados del programa OCEANOS?
Lo más destacado de las dos semanas que tuvimos fue definitivamente explorar los ecosistemas cara a cara, ver todo, especialmente por el equipo de snorkel que nos dieron. Nunca he tenido uno propio, así que era algo nuevo y aprendí a usarlo correctamente, y cuando fuimos al agua fue una experiencia completamente nueva. Obviamente hemos visto cosas en internet, pero no es lo mismo que cuando estás cara a cara con esas cosas.
¿Hubo algo sorprendente para ti en este programa?
Diría las cosas que nos dieron. Me sorprendió mucho porque nos regalaron un iPad. Nos dieron equipo de snorkel. Nos llevaron a lugares en los que nunca había estado. Así que creo que eso es lo que más me sorprendió porque obtuvimos las cosas y pudimos usarlas en el campo.
¿Cómo encaja esta pasantía en lo que ya estás estudiando o en lo que esperas hacer a continuación?
Personalmente, quería estudiar biología marina. En este momento, he estado investigando más solo en biología, pero OCEANOS fue más una experiencia de ver, ‘oh, ¿realmente quiero hacer esto en la universidad o como una carrera en el futuro?’ Yo diría que sí, totalmente. Y buscaré más en la NASA y otras pasantías que siguen junto con la oceanografía. Así que creo que, en general, definitivamente me abrió los ojos a los programas universitarios y cosas así.
¿Qué te vas a llevar de OCEANOS?
Yo diría contexto. He visto a muchas personas diferentes que están interesadas en muchas cosas que pueden ser útiles en oceanografía: no necesariamente tienes que estudiar biología marina para estudiar o trabajar en ciertos campos del océano. Así que llegar a conocer a diferentes personas, diría que fue lo mejor que pude sacar de esta experiencia porque realmente espero poder mantenerme en contacto con estas personas. Quién sabe: en el futuro, algunos serán mi jefe, algunos serán mis colegas. Realmente espero que en el futuro pueda trabajar con ellos o verlos de nuevo.
