Hi, my name is Germán Carrión Flores. I am here in the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, Recinto Metro.
Which StoryMap topic are you presenting on?
Quality of water. I am presenting the introduction to speak about what is quality of water and what is the importance of quality of water to the ecosystem of the ocean.
What have been some highlights of the OCEANOS program?
The SAM association (Sociedad Ambiente Marino) was something new that changed my perspective about life, about the oceans, and what I have to do to be more careful. Also what I need to do to share this this knowledge with other people to help the ocean and the animals; all the ecosystem of the earth.
Did anything surprise you in this program?
Well, everything. I don’t know how to describe it because I came in without any perspective or something like that. But this internship with NASA – all that knowledge about Google Earth, remote perspective, SAM association, collecting corals and helping them to grow again – that’s something that I never in my life thought that I could do. So that’s something that I will remember all my life. And in some way I want to help others to know that you can do this at any age; help the future of the earth.
How does this internship fit into either what you’re already studying or what you’re hoping to do next?
Right now it’s a little bit difficult because I want to study medicine or something like that, but this is something that I love to do every day. So these past weeks were a new perspective of life, really. It’s awesome. It’s like I can get up every morning to make this, to help, to save ecosystems, to know new people so that we can share our experience in life and be better people.
What are you going to be taking with you from OCEANOS?
I have a new family here in OCEANOS. My professor, Samuel Suleiman: he is a great man. He helped us a lot these past weeks. And like I said, my perspective about life has changed with this. We have to think: we have to be more careful with everything we do, we have to make the first step to help people see what they are doing. And then they will want to help this system of oceans, pets, temperature – all of this. So I think that the thing that touched my heart is be more careful and leave a mark here on earth by helping the ecosystem.

Hola, mi nombre es Germán Carrión Flores y estoy aquí en la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico, Recinto Metro.
¿Qué tema de StoryMap presentará?
Calidad del agua. Estoy presentando la introducción para hablar sobre qué es la calidad del agua y cuál es la importancia de la calidad del agua para el ecosistema del océano.
¿Cuáles han sido algunos aspectos destacados del programa OCEANOS?
La asociación SAM (Sociedad Ambiente Marino) fue algo nuevo que cambió mi perspectiva sobre la vida, sobre los océanos y lo que tengo que hacer para tener más cuidado. También lo que debo hacer para compartir este conocimiento con otras personas para ayudar al océano y a los animales; todo el ecosistema de la tierra.
¿Hubo algo sorprendente para ti en este programa?
Bueno, todo. No sé cómo describirlo porque entré sin ninguna perspectiva o algo así. Pero esta pasantía en la NASA – todo ese conocimiento sobre Google Earth, la perspectiva remota, la asociación SAM, recolectar corales y ayudarlos a crecer nuevamente – es algo que nunca en mi vida pensé que podría hacer. Así que eso es algo que recordaré toda mi vida. Y de alguna manera quiero ayudar a que los demás sepan que esto se puede hacer a cualquier edad; ayudar al futuro de la tierra.
¿Cómo encaja esta pasantía en lo que ya estás estudiando o en lo que esperas hacer a continuación?
Ahora mismo es un poco difícil porque quiero estudiar medicina o algo así, pero esto es algo que me encanta hacer todos los días. Así que estas últimas semanas fueron una nueva perspectiva de la vida, de verdad. Es impresionante. Es como si pudiera levantarme cada mañana para hacer esto, para ayudar, para salvar ecosistemas, para conocer gente nueva para que podamos compartir nuestra experiencia de vida y ser mejores personas.
¿Qué te vas a llevar de OCEANOS?
Tengo una nueva familia aquí en OCEANOS. Mi profesor, Samuel Suleiman: es un gran hombre. Nos ayudó mucho estas últimas semanas. Y como dije, mi perspectiva sobre la vida ha cambiado con esto. Tenemos que pensar: tenemos que ser más cuidadosos con todo lo que hacemos, tenemos que dar el primer paso para ayudar a las personas a ver lo que están haciendo. Y luego querrán ayudar a este sistema de océanos, mascotas, temperatura, todo esto. Entonces creo que lo que me tocó el corazón es tener más cuidado y dejar una huella aquí en la tierra ayudando al ecosistema.
