My name is Francisco Méndez. I currently graduated from high school at University Gardens High School, and now I’m going to University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras. I’m going to study computer science.
Which StoryMap topic are you presenting on?
I’m going to be presenting on beach profiling, about the results that we gathered from Flamenco Beach and Punto Soldado beach in Culebra.
What have been some highlights of the OCEANOS program?
I had a friend from high school that saw this program and she told me she was going to do this NASA program on oceanography. And I said, ‘oh, wow. That’s outstanding. I want to do that.’ When I received the email that I had been accepted in this program, I was enthusiastic. And then we went to the first week where we met all the instructors, all the people. And then the second week we went to Lajas and La Parguera, where we were snorkeling and we were using instruments and that was all great. But my highlight mostly was in Culebra. Culebra was amazing. We went snorkeling in the coral reefs, and that was outstanding. Diving like 20, 25 feet under the water with fish; that was really great, you know, being down there and seeing another world we do not see here on the surface.
Did anything surprise you in this program?
Something that surprised me was the collaboration that we had with the instructors and also the dynamic. I loved that. And also the activities that we did and the relationships we made. It was really cool.
What was your favorite piece of merch that you got from this program?
I would say the iPad. I don’t have an iPad. I’ve never had an iPad. And that was so cool. But besides that, you know, all the instruments that we got, the information. Also the t-shirt; it was all really great.
How does this internship fit into either what you’re already studying or what you’re hoping to do next?
I have a profound love of the ocean. For my computer science concentration I mostly want to do it about AI, artificial intelligence. I said to myself, Francisco, if you can integrate computer science with oceanography, that’s really cool because you can do both of them: besides your love for the ocean and the marine ecosystems, you can integrate computer science to make something that can contribute to the problems that are they’re facing, originated by us humans. Artificial intelligence is booming right now, and we can do something about it; using AI so we can do something good to the ecosystems here.
What are you going to be taking with you from OCEANOS?
I would say the relationships, and the experience. I didn’t know what to do this summer, but being on this internship, I gathered experience, information and knowledge of every branch that we studied.
How was the flan?
The flan? Okay. Okay. How do you know that? Really good. It was really good.
The dessert was really great. You know, you always need to leave some space for the dessert.

Mi nombre es Francisco Méndez. Actualmente me gradué de la escuela secundaria en University Gardens High School, y ahora voy a la Universidad de Puerto Rico en Rio Piedras. Voy a estudiar informática.
¿Qué tema de StoryMap presentará?
Voy a presentar sobre perfiles de playa, sobre los resultados que recopilamos de Playa Flamenco y Playa Punto Soldado en Culebra.
¿Cuáles han sido algunos aspectos destacados del programa OCEANOS?
Tenía una amiga de la escuela secundaria que vio este programa y me dijo que iba a hacer este programa de la NASA sobre oceanografía. Y yo dije, ‘oh, guau. Eso es excepcional. Quiero hacer eso’. Cuando recibí el correo electrónico de que había sido aceptado en este programa, estaba entusiasmado. Y luego pasamos a la primera semana donde conocimos a todos los instructores, a toda la gente. Y luego, la segunda semana fuimos a Lajas y La Parguera, donde hicimos snorkel y usamos instrumentos, y todo fue genial. Pero mi punto culminante fue principalmente en Culebra. Culebra fue increíble. Hicimos esnórquel en los arrecifes de coral y fue extraordinario. Buceo como 20, 25 pies bajo el agua con peces; eso fue realmente genial, ya sabes, estar ahí abajo y ver otro mundo que no vemos aquí en la superficie.
¿Hubo algo sorprendente para ti en este programa?
Algo que me sorprendió fue la colaboración que tuvimos con los instructores y también la dinámica. Me encantó que. Y también las actividades que hicimos y las relaciones que hicimos. Fue realmente genial.
¿Cuál fue tu pieza favorita de merch que obtuviste de este programa?
Yo diría el iPad. No tengo un iPad. Nunca he tenido un iPad. Y eso fue genial. Pero además de eso, ya sabes, todos los instrumentos que tenemos, la información. También la camiseta; fue todo realmente genial.
¿Cómo encaja esta pasantía en lo que ya estás estudiando o en lo que esperas hacer a continuación?
Tengo un profundo amor por el océano. Para mi concentración en informática, principalmente quiero hacerlo sobre IA, inteligencia artificial. Me dije, Francisco, si puedes integrar las ciencias de la computación con la oceanografía, eso es genial porque puedes hacer ambas cosas: además de tu amor por el océano y los ecosistemas marinos, puedes integrar las ciencias de la computación para hacer algo que pueda contribuir a los problemas que están enfrentando, originados por nosotros los humanos. La inteligencia artificial está en auge en este momento y podemos hacer algo al respecto; usando IA para que podamos hacer algo bueno para los ecosistemas aquí.
¿Qué te vas a llevar de OCEANOS?
Yo diría que las relaciones y la experiencia. No sabía qué hacer este verano, pero estando en esta pasantía, junté experiencia, información y conocimiento de cada rama que estudiamos.
¿Cómo estuvo el flan?
El flan? Bueno. Bueno. ¿Como sabes eso? Realmente bueno. Fue realmente bueno.
El postre fue realmente genial. Ya sabes, siempre hay que dejar algo de espacio para el postre.
