My name is Criselys Perez, or Chris. I am enrolled in Interamerican University, and I’m in my first year.
Which StoryMap topic are you presenting on?
I’m doing spatial water quality. I’m doing the Culebra analysis on data, chlorophyll, and temperature in that area.
What have been some highlights of the OCEANOS program?
That’s kind of interesting. Before joining this program, I was doubting because of the fact that I don’t know how to swim and everything was in the water. I was thinking, ‘Well, am I going to be safe? What am I going to take from this journey?’ But either way I just thought, how many people actually have the chance to be here? And I submitted the application and I got accepted, and my family was really thrilled about it. And I’m here.
That’s amazing. What a leap of faith. What about after you got to the program?
Getting in the water, and I actually got new friends, new people. It was inspiring working with all these idols for me. In the first week, there was Ved (Chirayath*). I would have never thought I could meet anyone like him. It was really interesting and impressive to meet and know someone that actually saw and discovered a new planet.
*Ved Chirayath is currently a G. Unger Vetlesen Professor of Earth Sciences and Director of the Aircraft Center for Earth Studies (ACES) at the University of Miami. Previously a civil servant with NASA Ames, Chirayath is the inventor of FluidCam, fluid lensing, MiDAR, NeMO-Net, and a plasma-actuated drone, and also successfully detected an exoplanet 150 lightyears away.
Did anything surprise you in this program?
I went to Culebra for the first time, and had never been in Parguera either. Even though I am a citizen here, most of us don’t have the actual opportunity to go to a lot of places. I think that’s really cool, and that’s very impressive for us that live here. We are not outsiders, you know?
What was your favorite piece of merch?
We got a lot of stickers. Really cool one. I just have a NASA one with the planet and everything. I just stuck it into my computer so everyone could see I was working with NASA.
How does this internship fit into either what you’re already studying or what you’re hoping to do next?
Well, like I said at the beginning, I didn’t really think a lot about it. I’m doing microbiology, and I’m actually planning to go to med school. But now here, I’m having doubts. I’m not a water person, never been a water person; I don’t surf, I don’t do that kind of stuff. But even though it’s a new thing, I actually learned how to perceive things in another way. It’s not a bad thing to be out of your comfort zone. I think it’s actually a great thing.

¿Cuáles han sido algunos aspectos destacados del programa OCEANOS?
Eso es algo interesante. Antes de unirme a este programa, tenía dudas por el hecho de que no sé nadar y todo estaba en el agua. Estaba pensando, ‘Bueno, ¿voy a estar a salvo? ¿Qué me voy a llevar de este viaje?’ Pero de cualquier manera pensé, ¿cuántas personas realmente tienen la oportunidad de estar aquí? Envié la solicitud y me aceptaron, y mi familia estaba realmente emocionada. Y estoy aquí.
Eso es increíble. Qué salto de fe. ¿Qué pasa después de que llegaste al programa?

¿Cuál fue tu pieza de merchandising favorita?
Tenemos muchas pegatinas. Realmente genial. Solo tengo uno de la NASA con el planeta y todo. Simplemente lo metí en mi computadora para que todos pudieran ver que estaba trabajando con la NASA.
¿Cómo encaja esta pasantía en lo que ya estás estudiando o en lo que esperas hacer a continuación?
Bueno, como dije al principio, realmente no pensé mucho en eso. Estoy haciendo microbiología, y en realidad planeo ir a la escuela de medicina. Pero ahora aquí, tengo dudas. No soy una persona de agua, nunca he sido una persona de agua; No surfeo, no hago ese tipo de cosas. Pero aunque es algo nuevo, en realidad aprendí a percibir las cosas de otra manera. No es malo estar fuera de tu zona de confort. Creo que en realidad es una gran cosa.
