What is your current role at NASA?

I provide resource support for the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science within the Exploration Integration and Science Directorate.

When did you first realize you had a passion for STEM?

I was in college, I remember being in my Financial Accounting class per my advisor’s recommendation, and realizing that I really enjoyed the financial analysis aspect. No regrets!

What advice would you give to young girls considering a career in STEM?

Every career in STEM or in support of STEM is important. There are so many options out there, let your imagination lead you to your passion. Do not give up and enjoy the journey. Be brave and you will succeed.

What are the notable activities you feel contributed to your career progression?

I have definitely learned a lot of valuable leadership and communication skills by being a leader in the Hispanic Employee Group. I have also been part of the JSC Formal Mentoring Program and the NASA FIRST leadership program. Learning leadership in a classroom is very different from putting those skills into practice. Having those safe spaces to learn and practice has been very useful in my career.

How have you handled working in a traditionally male-dominated industry?

I have learned to respectfully speak up when I am being overlooked, especially for being a woman of color and being in mission support positions. Working hard and proving that women of color are just as smart and capable as the rest of the team has been one way to earn the respect of my peers. I also believe supporting and recognizing the successes of other women is often something people take for granted, I have made it my mission to lift the other women me around me. The more women being noticed for their success the easier things become for all of us.

What advice would you give someone who wants to work at NASA?

NASA is definitely not for the faint of heart. People at NASA are dedicated to their work and truly believe in the mission.  If this is you, you will fit right in, no matter the career path you choose. There are so many paths to join the NASA family, be persistent.
