Facilities and Real Estate Division
The NASA Facilities and Real Estate Division (FRED) is part of the Office of Strategic Infrastructure within the Mission Support Directorate at NASA. FRED ensures that NASA’s assets and infrastructure are effectively planned, constructed, maintained, and managed to support the agency’s mission objectives safely and efficiently.
The division leads the facility and real estate portfolio across the agency, which includes strategic oversight of design and construction projects and maintenance operations, master and facility planning, and real property portfolio management across NASA’s centers. Real property refers to the land NASA owns, all the structures attached to it, and the ownership rights for that property.

Branches of FRED Supporting the NASA Mission
Comprised of four separate branches within the division, FRED includes the Design, Construction, and Demolition Branch, the Maintenance and Operations Branch, the Strategic Planning Branch, and the Real Estate Branch.
Each branch is responsible for functions such as sustainable, resilient space and ground asset operations, maintenance and repair that protects NASA personnel and the environment, thoughtful planning around the stewardship of the agency’s land and structures, and real property management. Functions associated with real property management include the acquisition, accountability, and divestment of land and structures, and out-granting lease agreements to external organizations.
