Originally called EOS PM-1, Aqua was named for the data it has collected on water in the Earth system. Using six Earth observing instruments, Aqua collects data on cloud formation, precipitation, and radiative properties, air-sea fluxes of energy, carbon and moisture, and sea ice concentrations and extents.
