Operational Requirements Finalized for the SFNP-Ops Evaluation in Houston, Texas

August 21, 2024

In a major milestone, the DIP Team and field demo partners agreed to a plan of required capability, use cases, schedule, support and logistics to conduct the Sustainable Flight National Partnership Operation (SFNP-Ops) predeparture rerouting operational evaluation scheduled to start in FY25. This milestone called “Operational Evaluation Requirement Freeze” capped nearly 12 months of shadow system evaluation, observations, and discussions of operational opportunities and challenges with field demonstration partners. The DIP Team started finalizing software development and deployment, as well as collaborating with partners to finalize the preparation for the operational evaluation. The meeting was attended by 45 people, including representatives of the FAA Next Gen Office and Houston ATC facilities, and our five airline partners, as well as NASA DIP and Air Traffic Management – Exploration (ATM-X) members.

FAA's Safety Risk Management Panel Evaluated SFNP-Ops Capability

September 11, 2024

The FAA conducted a Safety Risk Management (SRM) Panel Evaluation in Houston, TX, to assess whether DIP’s proposed capability and use cases, under the SFNP-Ops 1b evaluation in the Houston airspace, would be safe for operations. The DIP Team worked diligently with local FAA Traffic Management Coordinators (TMC) for several months to identify needs and concerns, and to build consensus on the expected use of DIP capability. The safety panel concluded there was not any significant risk identified and approved the operational use of the DIP capability on October 15th.

Demonstration of the Collaborative Digital Departure Rerouting Tool to the Presidential Delegation of the Republic of Latvia

September 18, 2024

The DIP team gave a demonstration of the Collaborative Digital Departure Rerouting (CDDR) tool to the President of Latvia, the Latvian delegation, and the CEO of Fokker NextGen at NASA’s FutureFlight Central (FFC) airport simulation facility. The Ames Research Center director Dr. Eugene Tu and Aeronautics Director Huy Tran accompanied the delegation. Dr. Swati Saxena, DIP sub-project manager, provided an overview of the tool and highlighted the benefits achieved through the operational demonstration in the North Texas area, which supports NASA’s SFNP mission in collaboration with American Airlines and Southwest Airlines, and Air Traffic Control facilities. Dr. Yoon Jung demonstrated the CDDR tool with live traffic explaining key displays, including the airspace status map, Dallas Fort-Worth International Airport surface map, and the Trajectory Option Set (TOS) Web Page.

DIP Awards Phase III Contract to ATAC

September 23, 2024

The DIP sub-project awarded a Phase III Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to ATAC. Based in Santa Clara, CA. The purpose of this twelve-month contract is to provide a preliminary deployment of ATAC’s Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) capabilities with a connection to the DIP platform to enable researchers with access to human-understandable explanations of reasoning behind decisions made by one or more AI components of DIP’s decision architecture. Through this contract ATAC will develop explainability methods and apply to DIP’s Collaborative Digital Departure Rerouting (CDDR) service sub-components and demonstrate the explainability techniques for the CDDR service.

DIP Engagement with the University Leadership Initiative Team

October 17, 2024

The DIP team gave a live demonstration of the CDDR tool to a University Leadership Initiative (ULI) project team (Project Title: Stress Testing and Hardening the NAS for Safe, Efficient, and Resilient Growth, PI: Mark Hansen, UC Berkeley) in the V&V Lab of the Aviation Systems Division at NASA Ames Research Center. In addition to live-traffic demo from the north Texas area, the demo included an overview of the machine learning (ML)-based prediction of departure traffic from Houston as well as New York airports. The DIP team and ULI team engaged in a technical discussion about the data and the ML-based predictive engine, which offers a lowcost robust solution with the potential to expand capabilities to the National Airspace System (NAS).

DIP Hosts a Virtual Workshop for Service Providers

November 20, 2024

The DIP team hosted a virtual workshop for the service provider and platform provider community to exchange technical approaches and experiences in four key areas:

  • Data governance
  • Quality of services
  • Cybersecurity
  • Interoperability

Approximately 60 participants from both industry and government sectors actively engaged in the technical interchange. The workshop aimed to provide a forum where the DIP team and the broader community present technical approaches, share perspectives, and exchange ideas to drive further enhancements to the digital ecosystem. The workshop materials, including the video recording, presentation slides, and workshop summaries, can be found on the DIP homepage under event section via the following link: https://www.nasa.gov/directorates/armd/aosp/dip-virtual-workshop.
