Von Braun’s Farewell

In February 1970, Dr. Wernher von Braun, director of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., was named NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Planning and transferred to the Agency's Headquarters in Washington D.C.

In February 1970, Dr. Wernher von Braun, director of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., was named NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Planning and transferred to the Agency’s Headquarters in Washington D.C. Prior to his departure, February 24th was named “Wernher von Braun Day” in Huntsville. Thousands of local residents, as well as state and local dignitaries, lined the streets as von Braun and family were paraded through downtown Huntsville, where the now former Center Director was honored with a granite marker.
