The Romanian born Oberth’s book, The Rocket into Planetary Space (1923), explained how rockets escape the Earth’s gravitational pull and was very influential to a young von Braun’s own thinking of space exploration. The Oberth award is given for outstanding technical contributions to the field of astronautics or for the promotion and advancement of astronautical sciences.
