Maj. Jerauld R. “Jerry” Gentry completes the 8th and last glide flight of the X-24A lifting body at Edwards AFB. This mission cleared the way for powered flights by the vehicle to begin. The X-24A was the third of the heavy lifting bodies. It was also regarded as the ugliest, and has been likened to a potato with fins. The shape was later used for the X-38 Crew Recovery Vehicle, intended as a life boat for the International Space Station.NASA Photo
