Marshall Scientist Work with Media to Prepare for Solar Eclipse

Dennis Gallagher (ST13) responded to a media inquiry from the Boston Globe channeled through Jonathan Deal of CS80 regarding eclipse shadow bands on 3/26/24.  The reporter wanted to know if it will be possible to see shadow bands everywhere or just in the path of totality.  He responded by stating that shadow bands will only be visible within the path of totality.  However, whether they are seen depends on local atmospheric conditions.  That includes a clear view of the eclipsing Sun within 30 seconds to a minute on either side of totality and the conditions near the ground, since shadow bands appear to be the result of atmospheric scintillation of the narrow strip of bright sunlight by turbulence in the air near the ground.

Gallagher was interviewed by Brett Tannehill of WLRH on 4/3/24 that aired on 4/5/24 on the topic of the 4/8/24 Solar Eclipse.

Gallagher also gave a presentation on 4/8/24 at the US Space & Rocket Center about the Total Eclipse for their event and was available for media interview and interaction with the public as a subject matter expert.
