Unloading Ignition Spheres
Aerial ignition specialists unload the ignition helicopter during a prescribed burn at Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield. The bucket contains plastic spheres full of potassium permanganate which, when injected with glycol, create a small flame about the size of a road flare. Wildland fire managers drop these plastic spheres in precise patterns to safely ignite a prescribed burn.
