An instrument that looks like a white box mounted at an angle has the word AVIRIS on the side in rainbow font, partially illuminated by the sun.

AVIRIS-3

The AVIRIS-3 instrument, developed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, sits inside the Dynamic Aviation B-200 aircraft during the 2025 NASA FireSense prescribed burn research campaign. AVIRIS-3, which stands for Airborne Visible and InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer 3, is able to cut through smoke to provide precise information on the burn perimeter, active firelines, and any additional hotspots. During the campaign, the team tested the instrument's new capability to stream this information to practitioners on the ground within minutes of capture, which would be a valuable tool during an active wildfire.
