During the NSF 2024 Research Infrastructure Workshop, Manil Maskey (IMPACT/ST11) gave an invited talk titled “Transitioning Science Data Systems to the Commercial Cloud.” This presentation dove into the critical evolution of Earth Science Data Systems, highlighting the transition towards adopting commercial cloud solutions. The talk was structured around the key theme of open science principles to foster collaborative scientific research using the commercial cloud. Maskey discussed the development of cloud-native cyberinfrastructure and shared the lessons learned. A significant portion of the talk was dedicated to exploring the concept of tailoring cloud solutions to meet diverse user needs, emphasizing that no one-size-fits-all solution exists. The presentation aimed to shed light on the nuanced requirements of different research communities and operational needs; and how multiple types of clouds can be leveraged to support these demands effectively.
