Walter “Whitey” Whiteside went to Long Beach to pick up a modified Pontiac Catalina tow car for the M2-F1 lifting body research vehicle. The Pontiac was capable of towing the 1,000-pound M2-F1 at speeds of up to 110 mph on the dry lakebed at Edwards. The car, which may have been the only government-owned hot rod convertible, was equipped with a specially modified gearbox to improve transmission gear ratios.
