Lionel J. Dutreix, deputy chief of the Propulsion Test Directorate’s Operations Division at NASA’s Stennis Space Center (SSC), was awarded NASA’s prestigious Exceptional Achievement Medal.
SSC Director Adm. Thomas Q. Donaldson V, USN (Ret.) and NASA’s Glenn Research Center (Ohio) Director Dr. Julian M. Earls presented the medal to Dutreix during a ceremony held at SSC on Thursday, June 9, 2005.
The NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal is given for a significant, specific accomplishment or contribution that significantly improves operations, efficiency, service, financial savings, science or technology that contributes to NASA’s mission.
Dutreix was given the award for dramatically enhancing the value, quality and scope of NASA’s rocket propulsion testing services through innovative leadership and technical excellence. He was lauded for activating and testing the Space Shuttle External Tank Frost Characterization project, part of NASA’s effort to return the Space Shuttle safely to flight. Dutreix was also recognized for installing a new data management system at SSC’s A Test Complex, and for his role in successful tests of the Integrated Powerhead Demonstrator for the development of future rocket engines.
Dutreix, a resident of Slidell, La., and New Orleans native, is a graduate of the University of New Orleans.
SSC is America’s largest rocket engine test complex, and manages NASA’s rocket propulsion testing. Besides rocket engine testing, SSC’s Applied Sciences Directorate uses remote sensing technology to assist in solving problems related to erosion, agriculture and other practical problems. The center is located in Hancock County near Bay St. Louis, Miss.
