The prototype space shuttle orbiter Enterprise drew thousands of spectators on a chilly winter day as it was towed along 10th Street East (now Challenger Way) in Lancaster, Calif., on its overland journey to NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards, Calif., on Jan. 31, 1977. Mounted on its strong back transporter frame atop specially designed transport dollies, the 36-mile route included a combination of city streets, paved roads, and specially constructed gravel roads and Rogers Dry Lake on Edwards Air Force Base.1977
