Although the new fiber optic sensors on the Ikhana are not visible, the sealant used to cover them can be seen in this view from above the left wing. With Fiber Optic Shape Sensing (FOSS) technology, real-time strain measurements can be used to determine the shape of an aircraft’s wing, monitor the structural integrity of bridges and pipelines, or ensure precise placement of the tiniest catheters, to name just a few potential applications.
