Bay Area Fireball, Oct. 17, 2012

As if to herald the Orionids, a yearly meteor shower caused by the Earth traveling through the dust and debris left behind by Halley's Comet, a dramatic fireball was seen and even heard across the San Francisco Bay Area on the night of Wednesday Oct.17. Although at first many believed that the fireball was connected to the Orionids, it turns out it was an unrelated meteor because it did not fit the correct trajectory. The 18 individual pictures which make up this exquisite animation were taken by Bay Area resident Bob Moreno who was watching the sky that Wednesday. The time stamp on the images is 1 minute and 15 seconds ahead of official U.S. time. Click here to read more about the Orionids. Image credit: NASA/Robert P. Moreno Jr
