Research Opportunity

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is America’s civil space program and the global leader in space exploration. The agency has a diverse workforce of just under 18,000 civil servants, and works with many more U.S. contractors, academia, and international and commercial partners to explore, discover, and expand knowledge for the benefit of humanity.

Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES) Announcement: ROSES-22 E.8 PSI Program Element

NASA has released the annual Physical Sciences Informatics program element. This call for proposals is part of NASA SMD’s ROSES-2022 solicitation. The PSI program element solicits ground-based research proposals to generate new scientific insights by utilizing experimental data residing in NASA’s Physical Sciences Informatics (PSI) system. PSI is an online database of completed physical science reduced-gravity flight experiments conducted on the International Space Station (ISS), Space Shuttle flights, and Free-flyers, or from related ground-based studies. The solicitation period typically runs from mid- September to mid-January. All eligible experimental data will be available in the PSI system. The award for each proposal selected will be a maximum of $100,000 per year for first year and $125,000  for second year.

New data has been added this year in each of the 6 Physical Sciences research areas. New investigations included are:

  • Biophysics: Growth Rate Dispersion as a Predictive Indicator for Biological Crystal Samples Where Quality Can be Improved with Microgravity Growth – LMM Biophysics 3
  • Combustion Science: Advanced Combustion via Microgravity Experiments Burning Rate Emulator – ACME BRE
  • Complex Fluids/Soft Matter: Advanced Colloids Experiment – Microscopy 2 Reflight – ACE-M2R
  • Fluid Physics: Advanced Structurally Embedded Thermal Spreader II – ASETS II
  • Fluid Physics: Packed Bed Reactor Experiment – 2 – PBRE-2
  • Fundamental Physics: Cold Atom Laboratory – Bose – Einstein Condensate Bubble Dynamics
  • Fundamental Physics: Cold Atom Laboratory – Consortium for Ultracold Atoms in Space
  • Materials Science: Microgravity Investigation of Cement Solidification – Multi-use Variable-gravity Platform – MICS-MVP
