Chief Financial Officer (Acting)

Sidney Schmidt serves as the Acting Chief Financial Officer, ensuring the financial health of the agency and oversees all financial management, budget, strategic planning, and performance activities relating to NASA’s programs and operations.

Schmidt also holds the title of Deputy Chief Financial Officer for NASA. In his capacity, he directs all financial operations across the agency and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of more than 1,600 personnel within the Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO) as the agency liaison responsible for civil servants and contractors to support NASA’s $24.4B annual portfolio.

After an internship at JSC, Schmidt joined NASA full-time in 1987. He started as a resources analyst supporting a wide range of human spaceflight initiatives and has extensive financial and budget experience. Over the course of his career, he has served in progressively more responsible leadership positions, including Manager for the Space Operations Resource Management Office, Resources Manager for the International Space Station, Chief of JSC’s Central Budget Office, Associate CFO, Deputy CFO and CFO at JSC.

Schmidt has had several special assignments throughout his career, including:

  • Loaned Executive to the Houston Technology Center (1999-2000)
  • Associate Director of the EVA Management Office (2011-2012)
  • Dean of the CFO University (2015 – 2019)
  • OCFO Resources Management Process Champion (2018 – present)

Schmidt graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in finance from Texas A&M University. He also earned Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Jurisprudence degrees from the University of Houston.
