Professional Background
Ron Kim is a technology interface designer and user researcher for Cross-Program Integrated Data Systems (CPIDS). He first joined NASA in 2015 as a technologist with the San Jose State University Research Foundation to design and test user interfaces of software systems for the International Space Station program. Over the course of his career, Ron has refined his disciplinary expertise in the field of human-computer interaction, with significant experience in areas such as interaction and experience design, user research, and human-centered interfaces involving physical sensors and augmented reality systems.
Since 2018, Ron has supported the Artemis program and the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate (ESDMD) through the design and deployment of various custom web applications used during mission planning and launch operations. These software solutions ensure that critical engineering data across ESDMD’s Moon to Mars organization is swiftly delivered and thoughtfully presented to subject matter experts, empowering them to make fully informed decisions affecting safety and mission assurance for upcoming human lunar exploration missions. Ron also performs research to address the challenges of long-duration human exploration of deep space and is involved in designing human-centered technology solutions to support increased crew autonomy during future Mars surface missions.
Originally from Chicago, Ron grew up in Houston; he received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in human-computer interaction from Carnegie Mellon University.
