Lead NASA Test Director/Mission Training Officer, Exploration Ground Systems

Slade Peters is a lead test director and mission training officer with Exploration Ground Systems (EGS) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Prior to this, Peters served as the Artemis II Mission Planning Operations manager, and Ground Operations manager through Artemis I, supporting the SVOM and flow manager on leading the development of schedules and integration products for post-Artemis I Launch Pad 39B and mobile launcher 1 activities and construction, and O&M activities, including Artemis II pre-operations content to ensure readiness for Artemis II operations. In his Ground Operations role, he leads the operations team that tests and loads the Launch and Recovery (L&R) equipment on the ship for crew module recovery operations. His team also unloads the ship and delivers the Orion crew module back to Kennedy – across the country – after landing. In addition, Peters manages the L&R operations budget and ensures all operational planning for L&R is on track and completed prior to each Underway Recovery Test and Artemis mission.

Experience

Since joining NASA in 2006, Peters has served in multiple positions, including crew module training article project manager, assistant NASA recovery director, and NASA test director. He also was an auxiliary power unit/hydraulic engineer and an orbital maneuvering systems engineer during the Space Shuttle Program.

Awards

Peters is the recipient of a Spaceflight Awareness Team Award for L&R Underway Recovery Test 6 and a Spaceflight Awareness Team Award for the Restore Propellant Transfer Team. He also received a Gold Dollar Award for readying Shuttle Enterprise for ferry flight from Dulles Airport to New York City.  

Education

In 2006, Peters earned a Bachelor of Science in agricultural and biological engineering from Penn State University. He also earned a master’s degree in outreach engineering management from the University of Florida in 2009.

Personal

Born in Meadville, Pennsylvania, Peters currently lives with his wife, Candee, and son, Kannon, in Viera, Florida. He enjoys spending time with his family and visiting his family dairy farm in Pennsylvania as often as possible. Other hobbies include bicycling and watching all types of movies.
