Intelligent Flight Systems, Deputy Director, Acting, Research Directorate at NASA’s Langley Research Center

Dr. John (Jack) Ryan has been with NASA since 1999 serving at both the Armstrong Flight Research Center and the Langley Research Center.  At Langley, he served as the Chief Operations Officer of the Research Directorate, Branch Head of the Dynamic Systems and Control Branch, the Branch Head of the  Safety-Critical Avionics Systems Branch, the Associate Director for Intelligent Flight Systems, the Langley Workforce Strategist, and the Director of the Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate.  At Armstrong, he served in many roles including as the Branch Chief of the Controls and Dynamics Branch, the Autonomous Systems Planning Lead, and the Chief Engineer of the Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance project.  He has conducted research with the X-56 Program, X-48 Program, X-43 Program, Autonomous Aerial Refueling Demonstration project, and other research projects.  His research has primarily been in the areas of peak-seeking control, robust control, and optimal control which he applied to a wide breadth of research projects.

Dr. Ryan received a B.A. in physics from St. John’s University, M.S. degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Minnesota, and Ph.D. degree in aerospace engineering from UCLA.  ​​​​​​​
