Media are invited to join social media participants at NASA’s Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, where they will receive a preview of Orion’s first flight from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., participants will be given a tour of a state-of-the-art 3D immersive visualization laboratory, a newly designed thruster and vacuum chamber and a clean room housing satellite communications hardware. There will be an opportunity to interact with researchers who have been working on the Orion crew and service module design.
From 1 to 3 p.m., the NASA Social will be connected via a multi-center NASA Television simulcast with NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida during its social event. A panel of Orion experts will take questions from each center.
Orion will launch on a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket from Space Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Liftoff is targeted for 7:05 a.m. EST Dec. 4.
The spacecraft will orbit Earth twice during its 4.5 hour flight and reach an altitude of 3,600 miles up in space. The test will provide critical data needed to improve Orion’s design and reduce risks to its future crews.
Media wishing to join the NASA Social should contact Frank Jennings or Lori Rachul or the Media Relations Office at 216-433-2901, by 3 p.m. on Dec. 2 in order to be cleared by Security.
