The International Space Station Advisory Committee honors the memory of Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Stafford, whose leadership, operational and technical insight, and unwavering commitment to international cooperation helped shape human spaceflight for more than half a century.
General Stafford served as the Committee’s Chairman from its inception in 1994, when it was established as the NASA Advisory Council Task Force on Shuttle-Mir Rendezvous and Docking, through its evolution into today’s NASA ISS Advisory Committee. His tenure spanned the formative years of Shuttle-Mir cooperation and the development, assembly, and operation of the International Space Station.
His extensive experience as an astronaut—including commanding the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in 1975—along with his senior leadership roles within NASA and the U.S. Air Force, made him uniquely qualified to lead joint assessments of planning, training, operations, and safety across the Shuttle-Mir and International Space Station programs.
Over his three decades as Committee Chairman, General Stafford championed technical rigor, open dialogue, and candid bilateral cooperation. He led by example, fostering a durable and productive relationship with the Roscosmos Advisory Expert Council, the Committee’s Russian counterpart. Through his steady guidance, the Committee became a trusted forum for addressing complex programmatic challenges and advancing shared goals in space exploration.
General Stafford leaves a legacy defined by service, integrity, and a profound dedication to the peaceful exploration of space. The Committee expresses its deepest respect for his extraordinary contributions and its gratitude for his decades of leadership, which strengthened international cooperation and advanced human spaceflight for generations to come.
