NASA’s Aqua satellite show another kind of “fire” works show when it captured this image of the Truckee and Earthstone fires in Nevada on July 04, 2017. The Earthstone fire was first discovered on July 03, 2017 and the cause is currently under investigation. It has already grown to 25,000 acres and its perimeter is 20% contained at present.

The Truckee fire was first discovered on July 02, 2017. Its cause is not known at present. The Nevada Wildfire Information map notes that the fire is mostly grass and shrub and estimates its size at 54,526 (on July 4). The fire is not contained at present either.
NASA’s Aqua satellite collected this natural-color image with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, MODIS, instrument on July 04, 2017. Actively burning areas, detected by MODIS’s thermal bands, are outlined in red. NASA image courtesy Jeff Schmaltz LANCE/EOSDIS MODIS Rapid Response Team, GSFC.
