Several fires continue raging on Portugal’s mainland in addition to those on nearby Madeira Island. Smoke from several of those large fires were seen blowing over the Atlantic Ocean on Aug. 10 when NASA’s Terra satellite passed overhead.

The natural color image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard Terra at 8 a.m. EDT (12:00 UTC). Smoke appears light brown and was blowing to the southwest. Red areas indicate heat signatures of the fires.
