HEMM Cryocooler Test Setup
A researcher conducts cryocooler thermal testing for a high performance cryocooler being developed as part of NASA’s High-Efficiency Megawatt Motor (HEMM) project. HEMM is a lightweight, high efficiency, partially superconducting motor being developed for electrified aircraft. These tests involve examining the bonding of a very fine steel mesh with a titanium tube that is used to create temperature difference between room temperature and cryogenic temperatures. Early tests help researchers determine the optimal, practical methods for integrating future systems and components together.
