Three people in (from left) blue, white, and orange long sleeves stand next to a silver launcher shaped roughly like a large tripod. In the back, a man in black carries a long red pole with an orange windsock on the end. The ground is covered in red and yellow grass, which turns into green trees in the background and blueish mountains behind, under cloudy skies.

By the Launcher

Members of the CRATER team wait by the launcher for the S2 Black Swift uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) to return from a flight during the field campaign in Rincon de la Vieja National Park, Costa Rica. CRATER (Costa Rica Airborne research on foresT Ecosystem Response to volcanic emissions), is a NASA-led project investigating the use of an uncrewed aircraft for volcanic trace gas sampling, in order to better understand the impact of carbon dioxide emissions on vegetation.
