Boeing Phantom Works has partnered with NASA and the Air Force Research Laboratory to study the Blended Wing Body advanced aircraft concept, a cross between a conventional plane and a flying wing design. The X-48B is called a blended wing body because it looks more like a modified triangular-shaped wing than traditional aircraft composed of a tube and wing with a tail.
