Eric Schulte of Rigging International – Sarens unbolts sections of the space shuttle overland transport strongback that was used to carry space shuttles Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, and Atlantis overland from their final assembly location in Palmdale, Calif., some 37 miles to NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards, Calif., from 1977 to 1985. After 27 years in storage at NASA Dryden, the overland transporter saw new life when it was refurbished to carry the retired shuttle Endeavour on its final journey, a 12-mile trip from Los Angeles International Airport to the California Science Center in Los Angeles in October 2012.January 26, 2012NASA / Tony Landis
