NASA developed software to integrate the data coming from its many robotics missions into a single massive repository, then worked with the Apache Software Foundation to make it open source and available for anyone to use for free. Among other organizations, the National Cancer Institute is using it to capture and share valuable data concerning early detection of the disease.
