Tracking and Data Relay Satellite-1 (TDRS-1) handled the majority of the ground communications for Space Shuttle Columbia’s Spacelab-1 mission (STS-9) at 50 megabits per second (mbps). The Ground Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network (STDN) was also used, but at a much reduced scale. This mission demonstrated the viability of a space relay to enable real time experimenter interactions with the Spacelab and return orders of magnitude more data from space.
