The 26 meter antenna in Woomera, Australia became operational when it received voice and teletype message from Goldstone via reflection from the Moon. Australia was favored because it was about 120 degrees west of California, which was part of a plan to develop three stations for the Deep Space Network. In addition, Australia had partnered with the U.S. during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) regarding optical tracking and had been photographing Vanguard I since 1959. Woomera ceased operations in 1972 due to consolidation efforts.
