In commemoration of the passing of the First Lady Nancy Reagan, in a statement from NASA Administrator Bolden, “NASA also remembers this great woman with affection and respect. Mrs. Reagan was deeply involved in the recovery of the families affected by the Space Shuttle Challenger accident. Her compassion helped them and our nation through a difficult time, and we never forgot her care and heartfelt sympathy in a time of national and international mourning.”
The photo shows President Ronald Reagan addressing more than 45,000 people at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center (then Dryden) following the landing of Space Shuttle Columbia on shuttle mission STS-4 on July 4, 1982. To the right of the President are the former first lady and NASA Administrator James M. Beggs. STS-4 Columbia astronauts Thomas K. Mattingly and Henry W. Hartsfield, Jr. are at left. The prototype Space Shuttle Enterprise is in the background.
