On Friday, April 6, the United States Postal Service held a ceremony at the 2018 Science & Engineering Festival to celebrate the release of four new stamp designs highlighting the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. Each stamp, designed by artist David Plunkert and art director Antonio Alcalá, features one of the four STEM disciplines, depicted with numbers, symbols, faces and other drawings, as well as one of the four letters of STEM, denoting which field the stamp represents.
NASA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Education, Kris Brown, provided remarks at the unveiling, encouraging students to dream about where a STEM education could take them in life, including possible careers. She also touched on NASA’s upcoming plans for a return to the Moon, eventual human exploration of Mars and the new initiative to build an X-Plane, allowing for supersonic travel over land with quieter sonic booms. Brown also addressed the teachers and mentors, stressing the importance of their work, and shared how her teachers inspired her to pursue a STEM career.
