Explanation or story behind the patch: The “project” was from Oct 2005 until Feb 2008. This was an effort to utilize surplus US Navy AIM-54 Phoenix missiles to develop a hypersonic testbed for small-scale experiments. The missiles were planned to air-launched from a NASA F-15 and were expected to reach about Mach 5. The project almost reached a PDR level of development, but was shut down and closed-out in Feb 2008 due to a lack of available funds to continue.
