Bushfires in Remote Area of Australia

Bushfires in remote Australia area

Bushfires in summer in Australia are not an unusual occurrence. NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image of the bushfires that broke out near North Cascade, Australia. For the most part since the area is remote, authorities are keeping watch on the fires in progress. A bushfire “advice” was issued for people traveling on Lake King Norseman Road in the north eastern parts of North Cascade. The “advice” from Emergency WA includes the following advisories:

  • There is no threat to lives or homes.
  • There is a lot of smoke in the area.
  • Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes.
  • Burning operations to contain the fire will likely result in an increase in smoke over the area

These fires were first reported on February 20, 2019.

NASA’s Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) Worldview application provides the capability to interactively browse over 700 global, full-resolution satellite imagery layers and then download the underlying data. Many of the available imagery layers are updated within three hours of observation, essentially showing the entire Earth as it looks “right now.” This satellite image was collected on February 24, 2019. Actively burning fires, detected by thermal bands, are shown as red points. Image Courtesy: NASA Worldview, Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS).
