Project: Discrete Roughness Elements Laminar Flow Glove Experiment (DRELFGE)
The black test section of the upper wing skin on this NASA Gulfstream III research aircraft showed the area where a “glove” for the laminar flow experiment was mounted. The glove had a line of miniscule bumps at the leading edge that allowed the boundary layer airflow to remain stable and smooth over most of the wing’s upper surface. The tiny vertical airfoils mounted outboard of the black test section are vortex generators that helped keep the airflow attached over the wing surface at cruising speed.May 4, 2010
