Fire & Air

Ames Research Center and California State University, Stanislaus (CSUStan) are partnering together to offer the Fire & Air program: a yearlong internship for CSUStan undergraduates, with opportunities to work with both NASA Subject Matter Experts and CSUStan MSI Mentors. The program focuses on two main research areas: atmospheric effects and causes of wildfires, and the study of aerosols in biomass burning.

About Fire & Air:

Fire&Air aims to teach students about the complex relationship between the atmosphere and wildfires through the joint mentorship of teams at NASA Ames and CSUStan. This collaboration consists of two key components:

  1.  A multi-tiered mentorship and research collaboration involving two CSUStan faculties, five NASA scientists, and eight undergraduate students over two years.
  2.  A yearlong undergraduate program that enhances the impact of the NASA-funded IPMSI grant by integrating research support with a Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE).

Each intern will receive:

  • Co-mentorship by both local Minority Serving Institution mentors and NASA Subject Matter Experts.
  • The opportunity to conduct groundbreaking research with NASA Subject Matter Experts on:
    • Machine Learning to Understand Causes and Effects of California Wildfires.
    • Observations of biomass burning aerosol and its relationship to clouds, meteorology, and climate.
  • Career, Personal, & Professional Development Workshops given by Dr. Samiah Moustafa from the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute/NASA Ames Research Center
  • Full-time pay during the Summer (40 hours per week)
    • Work can be done remotely from June 10 to July 7
    • In-person work required from July 8 to August 5
  • Part-time pay (up to 15 hours per week) during Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters remotely.
