A bright set of loops near the edge of the sun’s face grew and shifted quickly after the magnetic field was disrupted by a small eruption on Nov. 25, 2015. Charged particles emitting light in extreme ultraviolet wavelengths traced out the structures as they zoomed along the sun’s complex magnetic field. This video by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory was taken in extreme ultraviolet wavelengths of 171 angstroms, a type of light that is usually invisible to our eyes but is colorized here in gold.
