Greenhouse Gas Management Program

NASA implements a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Program in order to better understand the GHG emissions associated with the operation of its facilities. The Program includes NASA Centers working with environmental, energy, procurement and logistics staff to gain a holistic view of GHG emissions at NASA sites.

A United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket launches with the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2)satellite onboard from Space Launch Complex 2 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. on Wednesday, July 2, 2014. OCO-2 will measure the global distribution of carbon dioxide, the leading human-produced greenhouse gas driving changes in Earth’s climate.

About GHG Management

This image shows NASA OCO-2 measurements of carbon dioxide levels over Pasadena and the northern Los Angeles basin on Sept. 5, 2014. Each colored dot represents a single measurement of the greenhouse gas made during an overflight of the area.

GHG Regulatory Drivers

Water vapor is the dominant greenhouse gas in our atmosphere. Mean clear air precipitable water, 500mb to top of atmosphere from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder AIRS on NASA Aqua satellite.
